Writing Skills @IIAS

(2018-05-18). On May 18, 2018, Philipp Wilhelm spoke on The Skill of Writing. He was invited as conference speaker of IIA Switzerland's practice group Industry, Commerce, Transportation and Media. In his speech, he gave hands-on examples of how internal auditors can write compelling messages in their audit reports. Excellent internal auditors often invest most of their time into finding innovative facts, sources of problems, uncontrolled risks or not yet seized opportunities. This is great but not enough - as internal auditors, we must be able to communicate our findings in a way that reaches our readers or listeners and creates real impact. The Skill of Writing is an essential part of the skillsets of today's successful internal auditor. In his speech, Philipp Wilhelm outlined a model for writing impactful audit reports.

Art of Writing @IIAS

(2018-06-06). Every two years, the professional association of internal auditors in Switzerland, the IIA Switzerland (SVIR/ASAI), gathers for a two-day congress. The aim is to train for latest skills, to share current knowledge and to get inspired by new ideas. At the first conference day, Dr. Philipp Wilhelm presented on the art of writing ("Die Kunst des Schreibens"). He introduced a framework for formulating impactful messages. The audience could practice their writing skills thanks to numerous good and bad examples.

There are two aspects of writing audit reports. The first one relates to how you write, your use of language, how you focus and keep your message clear and attractive, how you frame an issue in its context. The second aspect relates to the presentation of your writing - choosing a good layout, supplementing texts with oral presentations, ensuring an excellent impression at your audience. We need to have both aspects in our mind when we communicate as auditors. In the end, we need real world impact - even the best audit report is futile if there are no consequences that follow.
